Innovation Watch: Keynote Systems

How’s your [mobile] website performing?
We know that primarily due to Keynote systems who were pioneers in developing metrics for the web when it was still in an infant stage. Now Keynote is bringing their understanding and measures of the web to the mobile web. Providing on-demand testing and measuring for Common Short Code management (CSC).

Why is this important?
Common short codes are the mechanism in which billions of messaging are transited for a variety of solutions. Probably the most prolific impact of CSCs is in tele-voting such as when you vote for your favorite singer on [Insert:One of 40 different country versions of] Idols. As McDonald’s would say: “Billions and billions.” So, these things have impact in the mobile value chain. keynotesystems.jpg

Tools for Mobile Miners
Keynote provides a short code management tool by illuminating how effective your short code is and its level of performance. Small things such as up processing time, latency, visibility of performance and overall reliability. With the mobile advertising getting traction around the world, short codes will be come increasingly part of our every day experience and marketing interaction–have you ever looked at a Snicker’s bar wrapper, there are short codes on there for most of the summer months. Soon you’ll see them in newspapers as well as billboards.

VC Interview: Carl Showalter of Opus Ventures

I ran into a friend from the venture capital world, Carl Showalter of Opus Ventures, at the Dow Jones Wireless Innovations conference last month in Redwood Shores, CA. Carl is the former Marketing VP for Juniper Networks and has a depth of technical and business knowledge in the IT, wireless and technology segments that dwarfs most VC “valleywags.” (Translation: those in the venture world who have no operational experience and yet pontificate on every segment as though writing checks conveys industry knowledge.)

Opus Focus & the Sour Period

Opus Capital focuses on early stage investments which vary from $2 to $4 million for a series A round, which yields a range of 20-30% ownership in a company. Carl and I cover how the differential between mobile and wireless (think handsets vs networks as opposed to culture code vernacular), overcoming the recent “sour period” of investing in the mobile segment, the evolution of WiMax and why wifi technology is evolving faster outside of North America than it is in North America.
One aspect which was especially interesting to me is the coverage of Femto Cell development, and Carl’s response to my inquiry about “inside out network development” vs “outside in network development” and which region of the world has an advantage with Femto cell development.

Facebook, Microsoft and the new Messaging: CTIA Podcast

The second day at CTIA IT and Entertainment 2007 in San Francisco, and Debi, Paul and I meet up at the end of the day to discuss the major issues as we see them. In this podcast, we’re talking about the resurgence of voice, but in applications; the new forms that mobile messaging could take; monetisation and making mobile payments; why aren’t we talking about MMS as the new message?; Microsoft’s $240 million dollar deal with Facebook; what that deal means for Google and their opening up of mobile; and a few points about hype.

Discussing Carriers, Control and Advertising: CTIA Podcast

Debi Jones, Paul Ruppert and I sat down after the first day of the CTIA IT and Entertainment Show in San Francisco to talk about the big themese and features of the day. Starting with a look at the control that the carriers feel they need to exert, we discuss the game-chaning nature that Apple’s iPhone has brought to the market; the (non) effectivness of mobile advertising; user generated conent and branding;and the impact of social networking on the smartphone.

Tech Crunch 40 Podcast - Discussing the Mobile and Communications Applications

As mentioned in our previous post from Tech Crunch 40, Debi and I sat down to talk about the five companies who won through to present on stage - namely Cubic Telecom (www.cubictelecom.com), Yap (www.yapinc.com), Trutap (www.trutap.com), Ceedo (www.ceedo.com) and Loudtalks (www.loudtalks.com).

There’s a lot to discuss, from business model, geographical challenges (both in distribution and acceptance), the might of the carriers and the handset manufacturers, and all the issues that a start-up in the mobile are going to have to deal with.

Mobile Social Networking is a hot topic for 2007. Perhaps, it is the hot topic for 2007. Witnessing the success of MySpace, Facebook, and Bebo on the web along with increasingly robust handsets has inspired the whole of the mobile ecosystem to get social. Operators like US MVNO Helio have place social networking at the very center of their entire service through an exclusive arrangement with MySpace. Nokia has announced a soon to be released handset based social networking tool, and of course, Twitter has made news through rapid adoption, inspiring competitors Jaiku and Pownce and receipt of their first VC round.

And then their are those who been pushing white label solutions for brands and platforms for mobile operators.

Nick Desai is the co-founder and chairman of the board of Juice Wireless. He co-invented Juice’s flagship, award-winning mobile social media product — JuiceCaster. Prior to Juice Wireless, Nick co-founded a market leader in IP based cellular infrastructure solutions. Prior to Lemko, in 1998, Nick was Founder and CEO of Zkey.com – a multi-award winning market leader and early trailblazer in consumer mobile applications. Zkey was the first mobile address book and email WAP site available in the US, launching in 1999.

Biz Stone is the co-founder and creative director at Twitter, Inc. Biz also helped make Xanga, Blogger, Odeo, and Obvious. Biz sometimes writes books about what people are doing on the Internet.

Paul Gruber is the head of business development and marketing at Loop Mobile, Ltd. Paul is responsible for the global expansion of Loop’s mobile social network, MOKO, and Loop’s mobile social networking partnerships with global brands which include Big Brother, Australian Idol and ITV. Previous to Loop, Paul was Head of Social Media for 3 mobile.

Muze works with large companies including as Amazon, Barns and Noble, Walmart and Ebay, and in their words provide digital commerce solutions and descriptive entertainment media information. Global Messaging Podcast Interview: Mike Grenville, 160characters

Mike Grenville is part of 160Characters (www.160characters.org), the SMS and Messaging Association. In this interview, Mike gives a great overview of the changes in mobile messaging over the years, and where he thinks things could be improved. 160characters also hosted the 4th Annual Mobile Messaging Awards at Global Messaging 2007, and Mike takes us through the winners of the awards as well in another podcast from Monaco.
