Chinese eBay rival to launch branded mobile phone

China's biggest online auction and retail Web site, Taobao.com, plans to stamp its brand on a new mobile phone, reports MisASIA. The phone, which will be co-branded by Lenovo Mobile and come with a pre-installed Taobao application, the source said Wednesday. The handset is part of ongoing efforts by the company to "develop the wireless market," including by drawing more mobile users to Taobao.

Australia. Text spammers fined $16m

The Federal Court of Brisbane has fined two companies and three individuals almost $16 million for breaches of the Spam Act. ABC reports. It follows the first ever court action taken against those sending unwanted text messages. The case was brought by the Australian Communications and Media Authority. A further hearing is scheduled to commence in November against three others accused of similar conduct. -

Singapore's SingTel Launches Mobile Music Service

Southeast Asia's biggest telecoms firm SingTel launched a mobile download service Sunday for music and videos in its home market of Singapore, which it plans to take to other parts of Asia. The service, called AMPed, was developed with Universal Music and will help position the carrier's offering beyond "just bits and bytes," according to the carrier's CEO Allen Lew. Times are tough for China Mobile - just hang in there

China Mobile has reported that it's profits dropped by 1.6% during Q2, compared to last year. This is despite it's total subscribers rising to almost 500 million during that same quarter - that's right, around 7.35% of the entire world population are subscribed to China Mobile. Roughly every 13th person on the planet is a China Mobile subscriber. So why have its profits dropped?

Over-priced, Wi-Fi crippled iPhone not selling all that well in China

If proof were needed that having an iPhone contract does not equal automatic success for an operator, just look to China. The iPhone went on sale there last Friday exclusively from the second largest operator, China Unicom. But the highly expensive phone, which has no option for connecting through Wi-Fi, has seen disappointing sales.
