Peggy Anne Salz-moderated session: mobile advertising

by Hylton Jolliffe

Peggy Anne Salz, the founder and publisher of MSearchgroove, which provides analysis and commentary on mobile search, mobile advertising and social media, led a discussion that addressed, among other things, the following questions: “What will be the role of operators in mobile advertising two years from now? What are the key factors for increasing or losing their seat at the table?” Here, she offers the conclusions and remaining questions of their discussion.

Among those who participated at her table: Keith Mallinson of WiseHarbor, James Whatley of SpinVox, Andy Miller of Quattro Wireless, Jeff Arbor of The Hyperfactory, Jonathan Steuer of Iconoculture, Dominick Tolli of Virgin Mobile USA, Jason DeWitt of Skydeck, Jay Seaton of Airwide, and Mickey Opacic of M3Mobile.

Paul Ruppert-led session on mobile social networking

by Hylton Jolliffe

Coverage of yesterday’s event kicks off with the first of the reports on the roundtable discussions that followed Steve Bratt’s opening remarks. Paul Ruppert, one of the contributors to this blog and a longtime industry exec who’s recently consulted to a large social networking site, led his table’s discussion around the question of “What opportunities and hazards come with mobile social networking?”

The video picks up as Paul introduces his group’s concerns about metrics, touches on some of the players at the table, and hands it off to a few of them as they talk about the potential and pitfalls of bringing social networking services to the handset. Those who spoke included Tullio Siragusa, CEO of M3 Mobile, Simeon Coney, VP of business development with Adaptive Mobile, and John Puterbaugh, chief strategist of Nellymoser and who, incidentally, blogs here.

Roundtable discussion at CTIA

by Hylton Jolliffe

Yesterday some 30-40 industry players including executives from Virgin Mobile, Quattro, Movial, M3Mobile, JumpTap, Moblico, and other leading companies convened at CTIA 2008 for an intense discussion of Web 2.0 and its transition to the handset. The event, sponsored by Airwide Solutions and this blog, was kicked off by a brief scene-setting talk by Steve Bratt, CEO of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), and then segued into several roundtable discussions moderated by MM2 contributors and friends.

We’ll be posting audio and video coverage of the event over the coming days as well as sharing other learnings and materials that emerged from a great afternoon of talking and socializing at CTIA.

Airwide, our sponsor, is hosting a small roundtable discussion from 2:00-4:00 pm, and after that we’re inviting bloggers and friends to join us for a “Blogger Hot Seat”, in which contributors to the blog will discuss industry trends and recent developments, and all can partake in some yummy eats and drinks at the Envy Lounge in the  Renaissance Hotel.

See Debi’s post for more information and RSVP-ing details. And be sure to join us!

Our friend and colleague Russell Shaw

by Hylton Jolliffe

It was with shock that I returned home from a night out last night to hear the news, via Debi, of Russell’s passing. How terribly, terribly sad. Most of all for him, as he’d seemed buoyant, healthier, and content when I’d last seen him several months ago when he was in town - he was happy that work was busy and rewarding and was having fun with it but most of all was thrilled about how things were going with his girlfriend, Ellen.

I’ve known Russ, who’s contributed to this blog since its launch, for what seems like ages now (in a good way) though in fact it’s only been about six or seven years since the early days of “commercial” blogging when he started working on various projects at and around Corante. He had his quirks, as we all do, but I greatly valued that he was good-natured, collegial, reliable, quick to adopt, trustworthy, eager to learn, and earnest in his interest in helping others better understand what he wrote about.

He was also, it should be said, a kind and thoughtful soul and it was the rare conversation in which he didn’t ask, with sincerity, about what he knew of my life, e.g. our new babe, and we didn’t talk as seemingly old friends about our lives and respective paths. I can’t say I knew him very well, of course, but in our half-dozen get-togethers over the years and dozens of conversations I got a good sense of the man: he cared about learning and sharing and his bearing was earnest and ego-less and we’ll miss him for that and more.

Mobile Messaging Survey

by Hylton Jolliffe

This site’s sponsor - Airwide Solutions - has put together a survey, run by a market research company, for the European market that we thought would be neat to put in front of the blogosphere for your reactions.

The survey, which should take about 60 seconds to complete, asks a handful of questions about companies’ mobile marketing efforts. Please, if you have a minute, take the time to fill it out - we’ll be sure to share the findings if we can get enough of you to participate to come up with substantive findings.

Go to the survey…

Thanks!
