With no end to the mobile security discussion in sight, most recently we’ve seen another hot conversation flare up around the latest security patches for high end smartphones like the iPhone. With the growing number, functionality and Internet capabilities of these high-end devices, handsets are now primary targets for attackers who will do anything to crack the most popular devices of our time. But unlike fixed Internet devices, smartphones are ubiquitously tethered via SMS, which can be used by fraudsters, hackers and spammers as a great channel to access phones- no matter what network they are tied to.
As I mentioned in my previous post operators are in a critical position to halt the spread of malware and other malicious messaging content with airtight antispam/fraud solutions for SMS. However at this point, the majority of safeguards are still lightweight SMSC solutions, and only address very basic antispoof measures- nothing on the scale at which high-end devices are currently being targeted. We hear this time and again from our customers and prospects at Airwide Solutions- operators need something more or risk losing precious revenue from popular, consumer devices.
The time to act is NOW- mobile security starts at the core network level if we’re to have any chance of fully securing smartphone devices and giving end-users the assurance and safety necessary for personal or business use. Patches are great, but if the underlying threat of SMS security continues, both handset makers AND operators will be on the losing end.
