AT&T Upgrade Pricing for the iPhone 3G

by Darla Mack

The truth has somewhat been revealed regarding AT&T’s pricing of the upcoming 3G iPhone. According to Gizmodo, ineligble customers won’t be able to benefit from the $199/$299 pricetag that was announced by Apple. Didn’t you kind of figure there was a catch of some sort?

The 3G iPhone pricing of $199/$299 with AT&T will only be for: A) Existing customers who qualify for an upgrade. B) New customers. C) Existing iPhone customers who purchase an new iPhone and extend their contract for 2 years.

So that means that there will be an unsubsidized price for those who don’t fall into that category, however, the price hasn’t been mentioned.

What I find odd is that before the iPhone left the shelves of AT&T, customers didn’t have an upgrade option… or so I was told by my local store. So why have one now?

Am I Eligible for an AT&T Cell Phone Upgrade?

Not all Cingular/AT&T customers may qualify for a cell phone upgrade. At this time, AT&T Mobility allows these customers to upgrade with no upgrade fee when they commit to a new 2-year contract:

* AT&T customers who have had 24 months of cell phone service since activation of their cell phone or since their last phone upgrade.

Certain AT&T customers may be eligible for a cell phone upgrade even if they have been in their current plan for less than two years (24 months), if they commit to a new 2-year contract and meet these eligibility requirements:

* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing at least $68.99 a month but no more than $98.99 a month, and who has been in contract (and not had a phone upgrade) for 21 months or more,
or
* Customer has had a standard calling plan plus data services costing $99 a month or more, and who has been in contract (and not upgraded) in the last 12 months.

A customer with a calling plan and data services of less than $69 who is 21 to 23 months into contract may upgrade for a fee and a commitment of an additional two-year service contract extension. No upgrade fee is assessed for any customers who are on a month-to-month agreement.

Note that AT&T upgrade eligibility may be further limited based on customer’s usage history, payment record, previous phone replacement, etc. Upgrade eligibility is solely determined by AT&T Mobility at its discretion. [via: Wirefly]

I’m not sure if this posting is correct; the iPhone 3g will be available to any and everyone who’s willing to sign a new 2-year agreement to get it. AT&T has now added the stipulation of activating the phone before you leave the place of purchase. Because of this, they’re not going to sell the phone without making you sign up for another agreement, and since purchasing the phone without a subsidized price frees the consumer of signing an agreement, an un-subsidized iPhone 3g being sold is out of the question. AT&T’s statement of “eligible upgrade” regarding the iPhone is pretty much anyone who’s willing to sign an agreement.

I’ve been stricken by the iPhone bug like you. Having grown attached to my Nokia N76 my “jones” has been somewhat tempered over the past year. I called ATT to see if I qualified and was told I was eligible for the iPhone even though I am not yet eligible for a phone upgrade. They said this exception is only for the iPhone, not any other phone. I would of course have to upgrade my network plan from the $5 I now pay for 5MB to unlimited at $30. I could upgrade now to unlimited for $15/mo which I did. I think I’ll enjoy my N76 for the next year now with its unlimited network access. 3G not sure, but its loads as fast as my ATT DSL. I’ll check back with Apple next summer.

You are correct in saying that it will be available to any and everyone… however, not that the $199/$299 pricetag. Current iPhone customers who purcashed their devices prior to May of this year will be able to upgrade at that price but lets say for example you upgraded your phone with AT&T less than 6 months ago… according to AT&T’s upgrade policy you will not be able to get the new iPhone for its discounted price.

I just got off the phone with an AT&T service rep. I know that I am *NOT* eligible for an upgrade until Jan 09. After verifying this with the rep, I asked him what the iPhone 3G would cost me in the store. After searching, he gave me the 199/299 pricing. I then told him that I was *again* not eligible for the upgrade pricing, and asked him to give me the full price of the phone. He proceeded to tell me that according to his system, regardless of the upgrade eligibility, the iPhone 3G would cost me $199 for the 8gig model and $299 for the 16 gig model. So take that as you will.

@ Dopey

The first thing I would have done was have the rep add that as a note to your account. Give them a call back and see if the story is still the same. If so, then that’s a good thing!
