What’s Wrong With Twitter? Maybe Their Hosting Provider-Or Maybe Not

by Russell Shaw

twitterrific.jpgTwitter has had some outages of late. In fact, there was one earlier this week.

I’ve been thinking to myself that there might be some scalability issue. But based on some news that has broken over the last couple of days, that might not be the issue here.

As TechCrunch’s Duncan Riley reports, Twitter cut their hosting provider Joyent loose yesterday. They’ve now gone over to Verio, which is a fully owned subsidiary of Japan-based telco NTT.

There may be some politics involved. Duncan notes that NTT is a minor investor in Twitter, so there could have been pressure on Twitter to switch hosts.

If politics rather than shaky hosting services was the key driver in this switch, that’s not necessarily bad. Verio used to host my own website, and I had nothing but superlative service from them.

But then again, my site ain’t Twitter.

Perhaps, with the infrastructure advantages Verio brings, the Verio folks and the Twitter folks can work together and find some engineering-based solutions?
