Virginia’s Proposed Texting Ban? Extend It, I Say
by Russell Shaw
As you may already know by now, the Virginia General Assembly is considering a pair of measures that would ban texting while driving a car.
But betcha didn’t know the reach of the proposed legislation doesn’t stop at prohibiting texting while driving a car.
One of the measures would forbid the practice for texters who are riding a bicycle, motorcycle, moped or get this: an electric wheelchair.
Much as I am a civil libertarian, I actually think this measure ought to be supported. But for the grace of a second or two, this fall, I would have collided with a distracted, cycling text-er.
(Or is that texting cyclist?).
Doesn’t matter. If you are operating machinery while moving, paying attention to that should be your immediate concern. If you must text, pull over.
One final thought: how about a ban on texting for pedestrians who are crossing the street?
Or am I too much of a “nanny stater?”
