The Pros and Cons of Mobile Messaging - It’s All In the Plan

by Darla Mack

Back in my early T-Mobile days I registered for a mobile chat group called Upoc. That was almost 5 years ago. I chose to stop using the group because it ended up hogging my phone with messages. Today’s reincarnate is Twitter and ironically many of my Upoc chat buddies have moved over to it.

In the US I think the determining factor of mobile chat groups and messaging all together depends on the carriers price plan. Now a few of us T-Mobile UPOC chatters were fortunate enough to be grandfathered into what used to be called Buddy-Time. For $10 a month users could enjoy unlimited text messaging. This plan is no longer available, but very much longed for with new consumers.

Since the demise of Buddy-Time’s availability, I haven’t really come across anything that matches the price range. Why are providers so pricey when it comes to messaging?

Interesting. My Sprint plan has unlimited texting for $5/month. I don’t know if this was a grandfathered thing, as well, because I notice I can “upgrade” to 300 additional texts for another $5.
